13TH ANNUAL WOODS TRAIL RUN
OCTOBER 4, 2003

Sanctioning For High Schools. This event is sanctioned by the National Federation of State High School Associations for high school competitors from Connecticut, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York, Maine, Maryland, Massachusetts, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, Vermont, and Oregon. High schools must be a member in good standing of their state's affiliate of the NFHS to compete. If your high school is not a member of your state's affiliate, then the only way you may participate is if you get permission or a waiver from your state's affiliate or from the Vermont Principals' Association. In many cases, private schools can get such a waiver. [NOTE: Schools that are not a member of their home state's affiliate of the NFHS should call Dan Grossman before sending an entry.  He can provide a waiver form from the Vermont Principals' Association.]

Sanctioning for Junior High Schools. The NFHS does not sanction events for junior high schools. Any runner in 6th, 7th, or 8th grade may run.

Race Distances. High School Girls & Boys: 5,000 meters. Junior High School Girls & Boys: 2,700 meters.

Grade Divisions. High School races are for students in 9th, 10th, 11th, and 12th grades. Junior High School races are for students in 6th, 7th, and 8th grades. Please do not enter runners younger than 6th-graders. Please do not ask to have junior high runners moved up to the high school races. A psalmist said, "For everything there is a time and a season," and we apply that sage rule here.

Race Seeding. None for Junior High races. For High School races, individual runners will be seeded into races based on their 5K times, so that all runners will run in races with comparably skilled runners. Then, all the races in the whole event will scored, based on times, as if they were one huge race, to arrive at team scores. After we receive all the entries, we will break the runners up into seeded races of 150 to 200 runners. See the enclosed "Race Format" sheet for more details.

Spikes. High School runners may wear cross-country spikes. Junior High runners may NOT wear spikes.

Awards. Awards will be given for individual races, for overall performances, and for teams.

Fees. High-school runners (add boys & girls together): First 20 from one school: $4/each; 21st-30th: $3/each; 31st-50th: $2/each; 51st+: $1/each. Junior-high-school runners (add boys & girls together): First 20 from one school: $3 each; 21st+: $1/each. Entry fees are per runner and are graduated -- Example for 55 high-school runners from one school, 25 girls and 30 boys: (20 x $4) + (10 x $3) + (20 x $2) + (5 x $1) = $155 total. (Please note: We changed the fees in 1996. In the past, when we used a "maximum-fee-per-school" system, more than 25% of the runners fell above the maximum-fee line and thus ran for "free." Because many of our costs are per-runner, and because, in past years, smaller teams paid for every runner, while larger teams did not, we believe a graduated, per-runner fee system is fairer.) There is a $25 late-registration fee for entries postmarked after September 28.  [NOTE: Please e-mail Dan Grossman at dan@dg123.com as soon as you know you are coming.  We need to send a list of expected participants to the NFHS on September 23.  You may still register up until September 27; we will update the list for the NFHS nearer to the event. You may want to e-mail us even if you are unsure if you are coming--there is no obligation to come if your plans change.]   Click for Computation of Fees.

Pasta Dinner. There will be a pasta dinner on October 3 from 5:00 to 7:00. You must make a reservation and pay for the dinner in advance to be sure of a place, but we are able to accommodate some walk-ins. The charge will be $5.00 per person. Coaches are free, but please make a reservation. Mark dinner reservations on the registration form, and include payment with your registration.
